The Bible speaks of a church that has been given the resurrected Christ in all His glory, power and majesty. In Ephesians, St Paul says: “God raised Christ from the dead and set him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power , and might and dominion ….and every name that is named …. and hath put all things under his feet and gave him to be the head over all things to the church (ch. 1:19-22).
It pleased God to establish such a church in Doha and when we think of the great privilege granted to us to be its members , we cannot but ceaselessly thank God for His goodness and faithfulness towards us.
From four brothers -- VK John, PM Chacko, George Thomas and K Abraham -- who came together for spiritual fellowship in a room in Doha on January 18, 1974, the church has grown to the present level in 36 years , where more than 300 believers worship the Lord in truth and spirit.
The history of the Church of God in Qatar is interspersed with tear-soaked prayers and shouts of joy, one of utter helplessness and exultations of triumph. It is as the Psalmist said: “Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning” (Ps 30:5). The church always emerged victorious though she “had to go through fire and through water”. As of now we can boldly say “God has brought us out into a wealthy place”.
As the church grew in numbers, God kept on appointing ministers to serve the congregation and over the years the following servants of God have pastored the church.
In order to bring up children in the fear of the Lord and to help the youth grow spiritually, the elders had made provisions for Sunday School and Young People’s Endeavour (YPE) meetings since the early days of the church. Presently about 50 children attend the Sunday school regularly and almost all members of the church , regardless of their age, participate in the activities of the YPE.
In the absence of a permanent place, church meetings were held in the houses of believers until the year 2000, and in a rented villa from December 2000 to May 2009, when the hall at the Inter-Denominational Church Complex (IDCC) in Messaimer, Doha was opened for worship services.
The year 2004 was a major milestone in the history of the Church in Qatar. That year HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani allotted land for churches in Qatar, fulfilling a long-standing need in answer to the prayers of the Christian believers in the country. We pray that God shower His choicest blessings on HH the Emir, his family and this dear country, which is our second home.
God enabled the Church of God in Qatar to build a hall at the IDCC complex at a cost of about QR800,000. The money for the building was partly raised through the contributions of the believers, who donated their one month’s salary to the project fund. The Church of God headquarters chipped in by sanctioning a loan of $ 75,000.
The church building was completed under the aegis of the IDCC committee in 2009 and the hall of the Church of God in Qatar was dedicated to the glory of God by Pastor PJ James, Educational Director, COG in India, Kerala and Rev. Larry G Hess, COG International Missions Field Director on May 15,2009. The Church of God in Qatar has been a founding member of the Qatar Malayali Pentecostal Congregation, formed in 2004.
Besides the Sunday school and the YPE meetings, the church conducts worship services (with Lord’s Supper) in Malayalam and Hindi on Fridays, Bible classes on Thursdays, special meetings on Saturdays and Ladies meetings on Tuesdays. Fasting prayers are held in the first week of every month. The Church of God in Qatar has been a solace to the distressed and the weary, and a source of blessing to all those who solicited prayers in their hour of need during the last three and a half decades of its existence. The church has been able to provide succor to the needy among the brethren, and above all provide a stable platform for spiritual fellowship to its members.
The mission of the Church of God in Qatar is to present “every man perfect in Christ” and prepare herself as the “chaste virgin” of Christ, all the while being cautious and vigilant “not to be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ”.
Glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever be unto God our Saviour who is able to keep us from falling and present us faultless before the presence of His glory, with exceeding joy.
